Pop-Ups Monday

Welcome to Pop-Ups Monday!  As the fashion tech world continues to grow, sometimes it becomes overwhelming and difficult to keep track of the different sales and designers featured on numerous websites. That’s where we come in! Instead of putting off your Monday morning workload by scanning countless websites for exciting new bloggers, sales, and designers, you can check out the ones featured here that we guarantee are worth your while! This week we are crushing on three different fashion tech websites featuring exclusive online deals, fun summer essentials, and even a temporary pop-up location.

Discover, explore, and enjoy!

1. Fab.com

Until now, Fab has been an online marketplace for discovering everyday design and up-and-coming designers. The home page features a plethora of daily deals ranging from clothing to furniture to food. The top of the page promotes new sales in addition to the weekly shops featured at the bottom of the page.  New York Design Week provided Fab.com with the perfect time to create their first physical pop-up shop located at 142 Wooster Street in Soho. The pop-up shop features only colorful products from the most coveted designers on Fab.com. The shop debuted May 19th and is only open through this Tuesday so be sure to stop by soon!

2. Zadenrow.com

I recently heard about this innovative fashion tech website through a friend and couldn’t resist sharing! The site features independent stores and local designers that represent the local NYC fashion landscape. Zaden Row’s motto “shop like a local” is particularly enticing for those avid shoppers living outside of the city. Products are organized on the site by category and neighborhood. This week, Zaden Row cast a spotlight on local boutiques Blake Scotland and Annabelle, both with amazing summer staples.

3. Refinery29.com

Refinery 29 is a “global style hub.” This information-packed website is one of the few which features sections on news, fashion, shopping, and beauty. R29 posts exclusive online deals so subscribers can avoid making purchases at full retail cost. The site makes it so much easier to stay informed with the fast-paced, ever-changing fashion tech world. With summer right around the corner, the two online sunglass deals were too irresistible not to share.  The Modo Eyewear offer is for those who crave a designer pair of shades and the STUNglasses sale is perfect for those seeking to make a bold statement for a fraction of the cost.

Thanks for joining us this Monday morning.

Get the total scoop by staying in the loop with Pop-Ups Monday!

Fashion Icon Friday: Donna Summer

In honor of Donna Summer, who passed away yesterday, the Disco Queen herself is this week’s Fashion Icon. The five time Grammy winner was not only known for her beautiful voice and songs that make us get up and dance, but also for her iconic style. I wish I could have been alive during the days of Studio 54 and danced to “Bad Girls” being performed by a sequin-clad Donna Summer. Her style was fun and flashy, filled with oversized boas, metallic dresses, and leotards—and she rocked the thigh-high slit way before Angelina. Throughout the years, Donna Summer constantly looked stunning for performances and on the red carpet. We’ll miss her music and stand-out fashions.

Feel like a Disco Queen and listen to our Donna Summer inspired playlist

Watch Out Wednesday: Wiseling
We are huge lovers of the “recommerce” business model, and this startup will take it to another level. Meet Wiseling, this week’s Watch Out Wednesday. Wiseling is an online marketplace to buy and sell previously loved fashion.
“So, what sets them apart?” you may ask. Think consignment shopping, not eBay—and they won’t take all your hard-earned money. We think this is a fantastic way to get a better value for luxury used or vintage goods, and can’t wait until their beta launch later on this month.
Be inspired and read more on the Wiseling Blog. Also, check them out on Twitter and Facebook.

That’s it for now.

Check back next Monday for another week of events.

Be in the know, be on the go, and stay fashionable!

Fashion Icon Friday: Miuccia Prada

In honor of the opening of the most recent MET exhibit, this week’s fashion icon is Miuccia Prada. She was born in Milan in 1949; then in 1978, Miuccia took over the company her grandfather started with his brother in 1913. Miuccia received a degree in Political Science and had no original intentions of going into the family business of fashion. Prada once said about herself, “I never actually decided to become a designer. Eventually I found that I was one.”

Since then Miuccia Prada has changed the way the world views fashion. Prada gained a huge following in 1985 when they released the simple nylon backpacks that were the “it” accessory of the 90s. In 1988, Miuccia Prada launched a women’s ready-to-wear line; by 1993 she added menswear and started another collection named Miu Miu—after her own nickname.

She’s had quite a successful career—she’s won the CFDA International Award, been listed on Time’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, and Forbes’ list of the World’s Richest People, just to name a few accomplishments. Her background and passion for politics have made her a very intellectual designer. Each collection she presents is revolutionary, with her pairing of colors, fabrics, and detailing. Miuccia took Prada from a small Italian leather goods company to a multi-billion dollar luxury label that is one of the most recognizable in the world today. We’re dying to see the new exhibit at the MET with two of our fashion icons, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Tech Crush Thursday: Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger

This week we are crushing on two of the most talked about guys in the tech world right now: Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the founders of Instagram. Mike and Kevin founded the app in 2009. Instragram had over 10,000 users within hours of being launched and has only gone up from there, now with about 4 million users. Inc.com has listed the Stanford grads on the list of 30 under 30.

Before Instagram, Kevin spent time as an intern at Odeo (which later became Twitter) and on the Corporate Development team at Google. Mike had interned on Microsoft’s PowerPoint team and then worked at Meebo as a user experience designer before joining the Instagram team. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard that recently Instagram was acquired by Facebook for a grand total of $1 billion.

How did our crushes celebrate? An extravagant weekend partying in Vegas of course! They were seen partying at the Wynn and Encore hotels and dining at Botero. DJs Deadmau5 and Avicii were among the group of people helping Kevin and Mike celebrate the Instagram success.

Watch Out Wednesday: Trendabl

Are you one of the 50 million people who are obsessed with Instragram? Then you should check out Trendabl, a fashion-focused photo sharing app that just launched in March.

With Trendabl, users can take a photo, add a fun filter, and post information such as designer, store, price, or color. To discover fashion, users can follow designers, celebrities, stylists, bloggers, and magazines. Some big-name users already include Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, DVF, and Brad Goreski. You can also search items based on color or product type. Founder and CEO Jon Alagem told Style.com“We wanted to create a visually beautiful social media platform that allows users to share and discover the latest trends in fashion.”

We even included Trendabl in our list of 5 Must-Have Fashion Mobile Apps.

Download Trendabl and check them out on Twitter!

TWF’S TEAM TUESDAYS ON TUMBLR.
Meet James Walker, our kick ass CTO.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Walkah: Reasonable. Patient. Kind.
How do you think others would describe you in 3 words?
Walkah: Serial troublemaker. Nerd.
What are your go-to blogs for fashion & tech news info?
Walkah: For tech: Read Write Web, The Next Web, and The Changelog. For fashion? Um. Third Wave Fashion!
Pick one: music, food, or movies. Always music. If you could listen to one artist forever, who would it be?
Walkah: Most people who know me, know I’ve had a serious man-crush on Mike Doughty for almost 20 years (I’m the top Google hit for “mike doughty fan boy”). I love pretty much everything he’s ever done. That said, with last week’s tragic passing of Adam “MCA” Yauch, I feel compelled to mention the Beastie Boys. As someone wise once said, it’s never not the right time for the Beastie Boys. Really, though, life with just one artist? No thanks.
What do you love most about working with Third Wave Fashion?
Walkah: It’s a fun, new experience for me. I know little to nothing about the fashion industry, so I’m learning new things. Truth is, though, it’s the first time I’ve ever worked with a company where I was the only guy. It’s fun to see gender imbalance from the other direction ;-)
Who’s your business crush?
Walkah: I have always loved and admired indie/solo developers. It takes so much to build a product or company on your own and I’m always amazed by people who manage to do it. Though he recently formed a company, for a long time it was Buster Benson, who seems to find a way to turn things he finds personally interesting into engaging products that other people use.
What’s your favorite startup right now, and why?
Walkah: I don’t know if they qualify, but I really admire what The OpenPhoto Project is doing right now. Photo sharing is obviously a hot topic (kind of has been since Flickr launched), but I respect the fact that OpenPhoto is competing with pure open source software and giving users ultimate control over where their photos are stored.
Oh, and in Canada we say “favourite”.
Who inspires you—whether in business or in life?
Walkah: There is a long list of people I respect, admire, and try to emulate—but if you’re talking pure inspiration, I’d have to say my kids. They provide so much purpose and meaning in my life. They keep me in line, keep me motivated and, while it may be cliché, I learn way more from them than they learn from me.
Where do you see yourself in 7 years?
Walkah: I’ll be travelling the world on the Third Wave corporate jet, of course! If for some reason that doesn’t work out, I really don’t have a backup plan.

Fashion Icon Friday: Tom Ford

When I think of male fashion icons, Tom Ford is the first to come to mind. Before he was the fashion icon that he is today, Ford started out studying interior architecture at Parsons New School for Design. Ford realized his dream to go into fashion while interning at Chloé in Paris. He then went on to work as a design assistant for Cathy Hardwick, and later for Perry Ellis.

Tom Ford first became a household name when he moved to Italy to help re-vamp Gucci’s women’s ready-to-wear line. During the 90’s, Ford took over more aspects of the company, helping Gucci go from a dying brand to one of the sexiest labels in fashion. During this time, Ford was also creative director for the luxury brand, YSL. In 2004, Ford left to move on to personal projects.

After leaving Gucci Groupe, Ford launched his own menswear collection. The Tom Ford Collection added women’s sunglasses; then in 2010, Tom Ford released a women’s clothing line that has been worn by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyonce. In 2011, Tom Ford launched a full beauty line—and also appears in his own ads. Ford’s collections exemplify glamour and raw sexuality. Since his days at Gucci, Ford’s ads have been known for their promiscuity.

As if Ford wasn’t already busy enough, he debuted as a screenwriter and director in 2009 with his film A Single Man, based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood and starring Julianne Moore and Colin Firth. Rumor has it another movie is in the works.

On top of all of his contributions to the fashion world, we swoon over Tom Ford because of his impeccable good looks. He always looks perfect and only wears suits—unless he’s at his Sante Fe ranch. And naturally, he helps every other man look their best—and for that, we’re super grateful.
