Fashion Icon Friday: Catherine Deneuve

This week’s fashion icon is the chic French actress, Catherine Deneuve.

Catherine started acting at the age of 11 in various French films and quickly became a French icon of beauty. Catherine has appeared in a variety of American films, including The Hunger with David Bowie and Susan Sarandon. This brought her recognition across the world, becoming known as one of the most stylish and beautiful women of all time.

She was a muse to the late Yves Saint Laurent, frequently appearing in his clothes for her many red carpet appearances. YSL also dressed Catherine for her films such as Belle de Jour and La Chamade. In the late 1970’s, she was the face of Chanel No. 5. In the 1980’s, Catherine created her own perfume line called “Deneuve,” later adding glasses, shoes, and jewelry to the collection.

In 2006, MAC cosmetics used Catherine as inspiration for its “Beauty Icon” series. While Catherine is considered a 1960’s fashion and style icon, she still remains in the industry, most recently appearing in Louis Vuitton ads.

Over time, she has kept her style: chic, feminine, yet sexy, always with a hint of French flair.

Fashion Icon Friday: Iris Apfel
Iris Apfel is by far the most stylish 90 year old lady we can think of.
A native New Yorker, she studied Art History at NYU. When she was younger, Iris worked for Women’s Wear Daily and also for an interior designer. After marrying her husband, Carl Apfel, they founded the textile firm, Old World Weavers (from which the two retired in 1992). They even worked on designs for the White House for nine different presidents.
Iris is a fashion icon known for her round oversized glasses. The line eyebobs even collaborated with her to create a limited edition frame named “Iris,” inspired by her style—which is bold and bright, much like her personality.
In 2005, the MET featured an exhibit all about Iris titled, Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel. Recently, MAC cosmetics collaborated with Iris creating a line that emulates her style with bright lipsticks and colorful eyeshadows.

We hope we’re still this awesome at 90!

If Satan were to give birth to a cosmetics line, it would be Gareth Pugh’s new line for Mac. We love to see the fashion+beauty industry collaborate and what two more amazing brands to come together. Us ladies of Style Startups can’t wait to rock their deep-purple hues on our lips. The line is set to launch Nov.23-Dec.23.
