Fashion Icon Friday: Marc Jacobs

In 2010 he was named in Time Magazine’s “2010 Time 100” list of 100 most influential people in the world along with President Barack Obama and culture icon Elton John.  In 2012 he was ranked #14 on Out Magazine’s list of “50 Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America”.  He has been the Creative Director at Louis Vuitton since 1997 and the head designer for Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs.  But one could say that accomplishments like that are only had when one is a true visionary.

As a young boy Marc Jacobs had no doubt whatsoever that he would be working in the fashion industry.  After working for a now-discontinued boutique in New York City in his teens, Marc began exploring schools and decided that Parsons School of Design would be the launching pad for what he knew would be a fashion industry-altering career.  In the mid-1980s he formed Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. (which, by the way, continues to this day) with Robert Duffy, but it wasn’t until 1986 that Jacobs designed the very first pieces under the Marc Jacobs label.  Shortly after, he received the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for “New Fashion Talent” — the youngest designer to have ever been given such an accord.  After many more esteems, Marc Jacobs joined the French fashion giant, Louis Vuitton, in 1997 under the title of Creative Director where he launched the company’s very first ready-to-wear clothing line.  In 2001 the world was gifted with Marc by Marc Jacobs, a diffusion line, and in 2006 Jacobs distributed his first fragrances.

But with success comes a myriad of other attention.  In 2008 Jacobs felt the first tinge of legal battles when he was accused of plagiarizing a scarf design from the 1950s by designer Gosta Olofsson.  This was settled out of court.  Two years later Jacobs was back in court but this time he was the accuser suing Ed Hardy for infringing on the designs of one of his embroidered purses.  Jacobs’ career was virtually unscathed by both instances.

Today, Marc Jacobs is planning to expand his brand even further with a new makeup line in collaboration with Sephora which the world is waiting on the edge of its seat to see!  But it’s his tenacity and fervor that gets our attention.  Marc Jacobs flourishes to the beat of his own drum and rarely ever worries about what other people think of him.  It is success despite the odds that make him this week’s icon.

Check out this really great piece we found on Marc Jacobs in Vogue from over 10 years ago.

Fashion Icon Friday: Lily Cole

We can’t quite put our finger on what’s got us so riveted with this young beauty but Lily Cole has certainly wooed us.  Discovered at the age of 14, she made her first cover only 2 years later when she landed British Vogue and has since worked with the likes of Alexander McQueen, Prada, De Beers, Marc Jacobs, and Christian Lacroix, just to name a few.

Her bewitching red hair and her pouty, unconventional appeal is what likely catapulted her to modeling royalty when in 2003 she found the spotlight and became one of the ‘new faces’ of the year in Italian Vogue.  In 2004 she was named “Model of the Year” at the British Fashion Awards thereby landing the covers of 4 more international Vogue titles, a leading spot at Interview, and again one at Numéro.  After making her name in advertising — by becoming the face of Rimmel London in 2009 — Lily has begun to take over the film scene where you can see her in St. Trinian’s and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, playing Valentina, alongside Christopher Plummer and the late Heath Ledger.  She described that as the biggest role she’d ever done.

When she wasn’t too busy being breathtaking, Lily found time to earn a Double First at King’s College, Cambridge in History of Art.  And she’s also an ally for Western Shoshone, a group focusing in the work to stop gold and diamond mining, using her weight as the face of De Beers to push this initiative.  Today, it’s been noted that she’s cozied up to the likes of Twitter creator and Square founder, Jack Dorsey — that pair surely brings a new element to the term “fashion tech”!

Happy New Year, everybody!

Fashion Icon Friday: Sofia Coppola

Sofia Coppola was born in New York, the only daughter of Eleanor Coppola and acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola.

Sofia started acting at an early age in her father’s films, such as The Godfather and The Outsiders. Following in her father’s footsteps, Sofia became a director. Her first film was Lick the Star in 1998, followed by The Virgin Suicides. Her third film, Lost in Translation, won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Golden Globe for Best Film. It was also nominated for Best Director, making her the first American woman to be nominated in that category. Some of her other notable films include Marie Antionette, featuring over-the-top period costumes, and her most recent film, Somewhere.

Sofia has indulged in fashion since an early age, appearing in magazines like Seventeen during the 1990’s. When she was 15, she interned at Chanel. In 1998, Sofia and her friend, Stephanie Hayman, co-founded the line MilkFed, now exclusively sold in Japan. Marc Jacobs considers Sofia one of his muses, personally choosing her in 2002 as the face of his house fragrance. She has appeared in many of his ads, as well as Louis Vuitton ads. Sofia also combined her talents for directing and fashion when she directed Dior’s commercial for their fragrance Miss Dior Chérie shot in France.

Sofia’s style looks effortlessly chic but she is always dressed impeccably for her many red carpet awards appearances and, of course, fashion shows.

Pop-Ups Monday!

It’s Monday morning and we have just the thing to energize you for the week! One word: shoes. Online shopping has become incredibly easy with the explosion of digital in fashion, but shoes seem to be the one trickiest piece to purchase on the web. The following three websites make shopping for shoes online irresistible. We’re pretty sure you won’t miss the long lines, crowded stores, and awkward salespeople as you check out these startups.

Discover, explore, and enjoy!

1. Shoefitr.com

This innovative virtual-fit website is the perfect solution to size variations in the shoe industry. The company discusses how different brands of shoes carry various size discrepancies. For example a New Balance size 9 is equivalent to an Asics 9.5. This explains why 1/3 of shoes bought online are returned. Shoefitr helps shoppers get the right size the first time, eliminating the hassle of returns. Shoppers pick the shoes they want and Shoefitr uses 3-D scanning to create a digital database with fit and sizing information, comparing the shoes you own with shoes you want to purchase.

2. ShoesofPrey.com

Finding the perfect shoe is no easy feat. Sometimes, after hours of searching, you find a pair similar to what you want, but there is something missing. Not only does Shoes of Prey understand this, they have come up with a solution! The site features an array of basic heels and flats and then offers the shopper the opportunity to customize the pair exactly how they want them. The toe, back, and heel can all be altered by shape and color. There are also various decoration options to add. For the month of June, the site is featuring cute pastel colored heels, perfect for the upcoming summer months!

3. Shoescribe.com

Top designer shoes and discounted prices (combined with advice from shoe guru Ms Suzie Scribe on how to maintain shoes) make this site quite a find! After registering, shoppers can browse the merchandise by category, occasion, or heel height. The Stars and Spotlight suggestions showcase featured heels and boots. Marc Jacobs, Sam Edelman, and Missoni are only a few of the incredible designers available on ShoeScribe. There are also amazing staple pieces such as Hunter rainboots and Dr. Martens for when you need to restock. It’s the perfect time to check out the site – a Spring/Summer Sale offers up to 50% off and free standard shipping!

Thanks for joining us this Monday morning.

This week’s “Fashion Icon Fridays” goes to Dakota’s little sister, Elle Fanning. This stunning 13 year old prodigy has had quite the year, and we’re not only talking about the big screen. Elle has been a muse to many designers such as Rodarte, and Marc Jacobs. Even in interviews, Elle has spoken about her obsession with fashion and how she can’t get enough of it (we can relate, sister).

This stylish powerhouse is definitely someone to keep our eye on in 2012.
