FASHION ICON FRIDAYS: YVES SAINT LAURENT
Recently, I went to the opening of Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective at the Denver Art Museum. YSL is quite the fashion icon, and you would have to be in order to have an entire international exhibit devoted solely to your contributions to the fashion world.
Starting with Dior in 1958, and then creating his own collection in 1962, YSL revolutionized women’s fashions & is one of the first designers to liberate them. He designed women’s suits and safari jackets, allowing them to dress and act freer. YSL was famously known for his “le smoking” tuxedo jacket and there’s an entire room in the exhibit featuring hundreds of his innovative “tuxedo” styles.
He pushed boundaries even further when he posed nude in 1971 for his own fragrance line—causing quite the stir in the early 70s. His clothes were worn by some of the most famous women in the world like Catherine Deneuve, Nam Kempner, and Betty Catroux.
Even after his death, YSL is undoubtedly one of the greatest fashion icons to ever have lived and his legacy will live on for fashion centuries to come.
