Tech Crush Thursday: Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss
A lot of fashionistas owe a big thank you to Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss for helping girls dress to the nines, without going into debt. The two friends co-founded Rent the Runway, a website where one can rent designer dresses, and now accessories, for a very low cost.
After Jennifer attended Harvard and Jenny attended Yale, the two friends met at Harvard Business School and became fast friends. The idea for RTR bloomed out of an issue every girl faces: “A closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear.” They saw opportunity in the fact that women want new dresses for every occasion, but don’t always have the means to make this happen.
The company has grown over the past few years—now with over 600,000 members—and the inventory has spanned into dresses for a variety of different events: prom, cocktail parties, red carpet events, and even bridesmaid dresses from over 120 designers.
RTR was named one of Time Magazine’s “50 Best Websites.” Additionally, Jenn and Jenny were recently listed by Inc. as two of the 30 Coolest Entrepreneurs Under 30.

Watch Out Wednesday: Material Wrld
Material Wrld is a fabulous site where users can shop the most covetable closets of trendsetters and fashionistas. Material Wrld was started by friends Jie and Rie who bonded at Harvard Business School over, as they say, “a mutual love of fashion, dance, and businesses that do good.” Jie and Rie then teamed up with Jeremy, who had previously been at The Thingdom, a social network for things.
The site is an online community for the fashion-obsessed to buy pre-loved fashion from their dream closets. We love how they describe their goal in creating this marketplace: “so the stylish could easily refresh their looks with crush-worthy pieces from one another’s closets.” Right now Material Wrld has a pop-up shop where users can check out what exciting things are in store for the official launch coming soon—be sure to sign up so you’ll be alerted as to when you can start raiding closets!
